Quiet Lane Initial Consultation - Skippett Lane
Oxfordshire County Council has launched a pilot of “Quiet Lanes” across the county. Quiet lanes are minor roads where motor traffic is reduced to make it safer to walk, wheel, cycle or ride a horse. Most through‑traffic is removed by use of signs, speed limits and physical measures such as bollards or gates, but access is still allowed for residents, farmers and landowners, local businesses and emergency services.
Quiet lanes must be supported or proposed by the local parish or town council, and be supported or proposed by the local county councillor. They must be a lightly trafficked minor road where walkers, cyclists, equestrians and vehicles currently experience safety risks, with alternative routes available for through‑traffic and local function.
The pilot study is expected to last a year, and the nearest current scheme is Evenlode Lane in Fawler. If the schemes prove successful, the council may invite more communities to request a Quiet Lane.
Ramsden Parish Council has had early discussions with our County Councillor Liz Leffman about the potential for the lower end of Skippett Lane to become a Quiet Lane in the future. Before deciding whether to submit an application, the council would like to know the thoughts of Ramsden’s residents. There are no details yet, but if a Quiet Lane were to be proposed, it would be expected to be the section below DC Automotives, running down to Ramsden High Street. The map below is an indication of where the Quiet Lane might be, but the details would need to be agreed with the County Council.
If the Parish Council decides to apply for a Quiet Lane, the County Council would assess the application. If this indicates the proposal would be feasible, there would be more detailed consultation with the local community about the details of the scheme, before a formal consultation. The final decision would be made by the County Council.
